To Our Valued Patients,

As this newest challenge continues to unfold with COVID-19(Coronavirus), we wanted to give you an update. First, we are currently maintaining our regular schedule. As of now, the Arizona Department of Health Services is not recommending closure or modification. We will continue to closely monitor information from the CDC and AZDHS and follow their recommendations. We will keep you up to date on any changes we may have to make via emails, our website, and social media.

Second, we would like to give you some insight into our practices to keep our team and patient family safe and comfortable. Dentistry is uniquely positioned to protect our team and patients. On a daily basis, we practice ‘Universal Precautions.’ This means we ALWAYS assume that every patient may be carrying a contagious, dangerous disease and we follow strict guidelines to prevent the transmission of any potential disease, including Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, HIV, AND COVID-19(Coronavirus). This has been standard of care and regulated by the Centers for Disease Control since the 1980s with the AIDS
epidemic.

These measures include:
1. Strict hand hygiene protocols.
2. Use of single use disposable protective equipment and barriers.
3. Thorough disinfection of exposed or potentially exposed surfaces after every patient visit.
4. Disinfection and high-heat steam sterilization of instruments. Routine monitoring of sterilization verification.
5. Continual education on infection control techniques.

In addition to these mandated measures, we have also implemented:
1. Disinfection of common area surfaces every 30 minutes.
2. Availability of hand sanitizer in common areas.
3. Screening everyone who enters based on CDC recommendations.
4. Pre-procedural mouth rinse.

We are happy to address any concerns you may have. We will continue to care for our patient family during this time following all best practices and will monitor CDC guidelines for any new recommendations.

Thank you for being a part of our family. Thank you for allowing us to care for you and your family. Please know we are here to support you and help you in any way that we can.

In good health,

Excessive, Uneven or Recessive Gums

Gum disease is a progressive disease and can lead to a whole host of serious problems. While it starts out as an infection in the gums, it can spread to affect your teeth and jaw, leading to infections and bone loss. Gum recession is also a common side effect of gum disease. This recession also occurs simply as a result of aging. Recession can lead to infection and tooth loss. The good news is recession can be reversed. Doctors Zeiger and Frausto both have specialized training in surgical procedures involving the gums. Using advanced surgical procedures, they are able to graft back recessed gums in a short, minimally invasive, painless procedure.

What is a Gum Graft?

A gum graft is a surgical procedure used to fix gum recession. It most often uses your own skin tissues to stop and prevent further damage. The surgeon will either take tissue from under the skin on the roof of your mouth, or use the palate skin itself. Depending upon the extent of the damage to your gums, the surgeon could instead choose to use some of your healthy gum tissue instead.

The condition of your mouth also plays a role in whether the surgeon chooses to use your own skin tissues or those of a donor. This procedure runs the risk of possible donor rejection, however, but your surgeon will help you determine if a donor is your best option. Or, proteins could be used to coax your gum tissues to regrow on their own.

The Process

After a consultation with your surgeon, you will either receive a local anesthetic or be sedated. Depending upon the type of agent used to perform your surgery, you may need to have a friend or family member with you to drive you home.

When ready, the surgeon takes the chosen tissue and grafts it to your gums. The process is quick and painless.

Recovery

Although this procedure is minimally invasive, it is still surgery and you should allow yourself some time to heal. It is highly recommended that you consume only soft foods for about a week following. Opt for nutritious foods, since they will help you heal faster.

You will be prescribed a special mouthwash to use that will help you fight plaque buildup. You shouldn't brush or floss until you are healed. Antibiotics will be prescribed as well to ward off any chance of infection.

Maintenance

After you have healed, you should go back to a normal oral hygiene routine, including brushing, flossing and using mouthwash. Gum grafts can give you a new set of gums, but they are not a permanent preventative measure. A regular brushing routine will help keep your new gums healthy and prevent both tooth decay and future gum disease. Also, be sure to visit the dentist at least twice a year. This will provide you with an extensive cleaning and thorough exam, including the condition of your graft.

If you are experiencing a significant of gum recession, Doctors Zeiger and Frausto are the experienced surgeons who can help you prevent infections and tooth loss by means of a gum graft. Call today to schedule an appointment.
