In dental care, tooth removal is considered a last resort. A dentist should do everything possible to save a tooth prior to extracting it. However, sometimes, it becomes necessary to remove a tooth in order to keep the others and the gums healthy. Before you have an extraction, it is important to understand what it means and the post-op care you should maintain. There are side effects to removing teeth and they include:
Bleeding
Once an extraction procedure is performed, bleeding will occur. However, bleeding is important as it helps in the formation of a clot, which works to stop further bleeding. An oral surgeon will ask a patient to bite on gauze for about 30 minutes. Should there be further bleeding, you can bite another gauze pad for another 30 minutes. You may have to repeat the process several times to allow a clot to form.
Swelling
There is a minor level of swelling within the mouth as well as the cheek. Usually, the swelling will occur a day following the extraction. You can use ice packs to reduce the swelling.
Minimal Pain or Discomfort
You will experience mild to moderate pain after extraction, and it's pretty normal. However, you can counter the problem with over-the-counter painkillers. Make sure you adhere to the directions provided on the pack or container of the medication and avoid exceeding the daily dosage. If the pain worsens or persists, get back to the oral surgery team.
Facial Discoloration
If the face or cheek swells, you may as well have discolored skin. However, this is quite normal and expected. The discoloration may manifest in the form of a light shade of brown, green, or blue color. Don't worry if this happens because it will fade after some days.
