Signs of TMD That Most People Do Not Think Of

Signs of TMD That Most People Do Not Think OfIf you are at all familiar with TMD or TMJ disorders, you probably know that these conditions involve your jaw. TMD can have many different causes, but it is fundamentally due to an issue with the way that the joints, nerves, muscles, and tendons of your jaw move and work together. It is fairly straightforward, then, that TMD would cause jaw pain, difficulty chewing and opening your mouth, popping or clicking sounds when you open and close your mouth, and feeling like your jaw is locked into one position. But TMD can also cause a wide variety of other symptoms that may seem unusual at first glance. Read on to learn more.

Sinus Pressure

Your jaw and back teeth are linked to your sinuses via shared nerve pathways. As a result, the nerve irritation that occurs in your jaw when you have TMD can cause pain, pressure, or a feeling of fullness in your sinuses, ears, and eyes.

Ringing in the Ears

You have two temporomandibular joints on either side of your head that connect your jaw to your skull. These joints sit right in front of your ears, meaning that pain and inflammation in your temporomandibular joint can also be felt in your ears. In addition to ear pain or your ears feeling plugged up, many people with TMD also experience ringing in their ears. This could be due to your jaw and eardrums sharing some of the same nerve pathways, as well as your temporomandibular joint being linked to the part of your brain responsible for hearing.

Dizziness or Vertigo

The proximity of your jaw joint to your ears can also contribute to another unusual TMD symptom: vertigo. Vertigo is a dizzy, spinning sensation that is believed to result from an issue with the inner ears, which are responsible for balance. TMD symptoms can be felt in your ears, including your inner ears, resulting in dizziness and vertigo.

If you experience any of the above TMD symptoms, we may be able to help. Call our office today to discuss your treatment options.
