Do I Need to be Referred to an Oral Surgeon Through My General Dentist?

There are many instances in which an oral surgeon is recommended over a general dentist. They can perform all of the same procedures a general dentist can like cleanings, fillings, extractions, and fluid treatment but they can also perform more invasive procedures and have a more thorough understanding of them. They receive far more education and training than a general dentist and are typically board certified which requires additional education and training on top of that.
When searching for an oral surgeon, it can sometimes be daunting to find one which comes highly recommended. Some patients are not sure how to go about finding one. Do they need to get a referral from their general dentist to get treatment from an oral surgeon?
Is a Referral Needed?
This, in large part, is dependent upon the surgery needed as well as the insurance carrier the patient has. For some insurances, they do not require a referral. The patient can simply pick a name out of a book and go see them. The insurance will then simply cover whatever the amount is their insurance plan has for them. For other insurance companies, it is absolutely necessary to prove that the procedure in question is deemed medically necessary. How do patients do this? How can they show the procedure is medically necessary? By getting a referral from their general dentist stating this dental surgery is medically necessary. Once this referral is made the insurance company will kick it in and pay for whatever the amount is in the particular insurance plan of the patient.
When Will a General Dentist Refer a Patient?
We will generally refer a patient for the more invasive procedures including extracting impacted teeth, dental implant placement, repairing facial or oral trauma, providing evaluations for pathologic concerns such as tumors and infections.
