How to Diagnose Sleep Apnea

Posted on 5/24/2021 by Candice
How to Diagnose Sleep ApneaSleep apnea is a serious sleeping disorder in which people tend to stop breathing for a while during their sleep. It not only disturbs their sleeping patterns but can cause a ton of other problems such as snoring, headaches, teeth grinding, stress, and even depression.

However, the good news is that it can be easily treated as well. Depending on the kind of sleep apnea and its severity, your doctor might recommend you using positive air pressure (PAP) machine to ensure proper breathing, or you can even go for oral surgery to help with the problem.

But, before all that, you need to diagnose the problem first, and here's how to diagnose sleep apnea.

Tests to Diagnose Sleep Apnea

An ENT surgeon or neurologist can perform several tests to diagnose if you are suffering from sleep apnea. Firstly, they might ask you to do a subjective self-assessment. This will require you to observe and report your symptoms.

Moreover, you will also need your partner or a roommate to observe you while you sleep and report any other symptoms that you won't be able to realize yourself.

After that, the doctor may give you some questionnaires to fill out. Based on their results, they could diagnose how likely you are to have sleep apnea. After that, you will also have to go through a sleep study at a laboratory for an objective sleep evaluation.

During this sleep study, a monitor uses electronic pulses to record your breathing pattern, oxygen levels, and other factors to determine your sleeping quality and diagnose any sleeping disorders.

If you're suffering from sleep apnea and are not able to adjust to a PAP machine, oral surgery is one option you can consider. Reach out to David Frausto, DDS at Surprise Smiles to determine whether you qualify for oral surgery to treat sleep apnea.
