Trauma of any kind to the face and head can be alarming for anyone but when it involves the mouth it can be even more so. When injuries occur to the mouth, there can be a lot of blood associated with it because the blood is close to the surface of the gums. There are other soft tissues too such as the tongue and interior of the cheek which can be injured. Also, if teeth are broken off, chipped, or repositioned it can create a great deal of anxiety. A person's smile is a first impression when greeting people. If that smile is damaged it can cause not only physical pain but mental anguish as well.
Dental Trauma Description
While the first thought of many is their smile will never return to what it once was. Thankfully, with restorative procedures, the oral cavity can be returned to normal. For definitional purposes, dental trauma is described as an injury to one or more areas of the oral cavity. This includes upper and lower jaws, the tongue, interior cheek or gums, teeth, or even the tooth sockets. When patients perform self-exams, they should note cuts, missing teeth, and if their jaw functions normally by opening and closing it.
Dental Trauma Symptoms
It is pretty obvious when there are outward signs of dental trauma in the form of broken teeth and cuts that a trauma has occurred. There are other types of injuries to be concerned about that aren't always easy to spot. While it is easy to feel a sharp edge where a tooth has been chipped, there are other injuries to the jaw or TMJ which do not present in an obvious way. This can affect the chewing motion of their jaw and how their teeth come together in a biting motion. All of which can lead to more complicated issues which will need to be addressed.
