Do You Know How to Properly Care for Your Mouthguard?

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Candice
Do You Know How to Properly Care for Your Mouthguard?Do you know how to clean a mouthguard properly? If you are using the appliance to protect your teeth, you should make sure that it is especially clean. Therefore, it should be soaked and rinsed after each use.

What Should I Do If My Mouthguard Has Yellow Stains?

If you have left your mouthguard go (not a good idea), you will have to take some time to get it clean. It can also affect the device's longevity. To clean a mouthguard with yellow stains, place it in a container with warm water, two tablespoons of baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. You will have to submerge the mouthguard for a long time, depending on the severity of the stain. Therefore, soaking may take overnight or all day. When the mouthguard is not being used, store it in its container in water to prevent bacterial contamination and to maintain the mouthguard's shape.

Keeping Your Mouthguard Maintained

Often it helps, when cleaning a mouthguard regularly, to soak it first in distilled vinegar for 30 minutes and follow up by soaking with hydrogen peroxide for the same length of time. A second alternative is to clean the mouthguard in a combination of antibacterial mouthwash and water. However, do not use a mouthwash containing alcohol or dry out the mouthguard and affect its quality. When rinsing the mouthguard, it can also help to use a mild dishwashing liquid and water. Use a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to get rid of stubborn stains. However, before you set out doing any of the above cleaning routines, talk to us first about how best to care for your mouthguard. The above information serves to remind you of the importance of regularly cleaning and soaking mouthguard, as both will prevent bacterial growth and avoid cross-contamination of the appliance.
