 A dental abscess is a small pocket of pus that is next to a tooth. An abscess will often cause pain, but that is not always the case. There have been people who have had an abscess for years without any pain, but that does not mean that you should ignore the problem. If you have an abscess, that means that there is likely a more serious issue on the tooth next to the abscess. Leaving it untreated could lead to infection, or something much worse. Not all abscesses require surgery. Here are some of the common ways that dental abscesses are treated. Draining Sometimes all that needs to be done for an abscess is that it be drained. This is not as cut and dry as it may seem. There are several different methods that are used to drain an abscess, and which one we pick will depend on many different factors. Root CanalRoot canals are a common way to treat a dental abscess, with a high success rate. With a root canal, the damaged area around the tooth is removed. Root canals have a reputation for a lot of pain afterwards, but it is not a reputation that they deserve. It is a common procedure that has helped countless people. ExtractionSometimes surgery is necessary for an abscessed tooth. It could be that the tooth needs to be removed in order to heal the problem. It that is the case, the abscess should heal not long after the tooth has been removed. Ignoring an abscess can cause problems. The longer you ignore it, the worse those problems could be.
