Healing After Implant Surgery - What to Know

Posted on 1/10/2017 by Andrew Zeiger
A woman sore after a dental implant surgery.Getting a dental implant involves surgery to place metal rods into your jawbone. While the implant will look, feel, and function just like a normal tooth after the procedure is completed, you will definitely need to take time to heal after the surgery. Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Recovery after Implant Surgery Takes Some Time

While you're probably eager to continue on with your daily routine, remember that you have just had a surgical procedure, and you need to take the time to rest. Especially the first day after the surgery, you should do your best to rest and avoid any strenuous activity. Anything that gets your heart pumping is going to increase the flow of blood to the surgical site, and you want to do your best to avoid that.

During the first day after surgery, you really should avoid disturbing the surgical site. You may brush your teeth gently, but try to avoid the area where the implant was affixed. After about 24 hours you may gently rinse your mouth with salt water to promote hygiene, but do not vigorously swish it, as this may disturb the surgical site.

You may keep swelling to a minimum by applying ice packs to the cheek on the outside of your face. The cool temperature will travel through your cheek into the surgery site. It will help reduce swelling and minimize discomfort to do this.

You will have some pain after the procedure. You should take care to follow the directions for any pain medication you may have been prescribed, and do not take more than is recommended. Doing so can slow your healing and can lead to other problems down the road.

The biggest factor in your healing is rest and time. Take things slowly, and please do not hesitate to call us if you think you may have a serious issue.
