There are a variety of reasons why your dentist may recommend oral surgery. It could be a tooth that is poorly positioned and potentially harming neighboring teeth or a wisdom tooth that is impacted.

It is also necessary to undergo oral surgery when receiving certain types of gum treatments as well as if you are having a dental implant installed. The most common reason for oral surgery being the removal of wisdom teeth.

Dealing with Pain Following Oral Surgery
It is perfectly normal for the area where the procedure was performed to be tender and perhaps painful immediately following oral surgery. Some medical professionals will prescribe prescription pain killers to help to manage pain after surgery.

Though in most cases over-the-counter pain relievers are enough to help ease the pain after oral surgery. Be aware, however, that you should not take aspirin after oral surgery as aspirin thins the blood and could cause your healing wounds to bleed.

What to Do to Expedite the Healing Process Following Oral Surgery
Here are a few simple steps you can take to promote the healing process following oral surgery.
•  Take it easy the day after surgery. Rest as much as you can and take care to keep your head propped up when lying down to reduce swelling and inflammation.
•  To reduce swelling and pain apply ice packs 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off the day after the surgery.
•  Stick to a diet of soft foods for the first day or two following surgery. Think smoothies, yogurt, soups, etc.
•  Keep your mouth clean by rinsing at least four times a day with warm salt water.
•  Avoid foods that are excessively hot or cold as the area will likely be sensitive.
•  Avoid crunchy foods for at least the first three days in an effort to avoid dislodging the clot.
•  Do not brush or floss the area where the surgery was performed until notified by your doctor to do so.
