Treatment Options

There are three general treatment plans for oral cancer. Of course, your dentist or oral surgeon may offer you other treatment options, but here is basic information. First, you may opt for surgery. For oral cancer, if you have a lump or a bump, and the cancer is localized, surgery may be the best or easiest option for the removal of your cancer.

Some people who have surgery may also have radiation therapy. Dental patients may get radiation prior to surgery to shrink the tumor first, and then have surgery, for example. Other patients may only need radiation.

There are patients who need to receive chemotherapy or medication to treat their cancers. The medication may be administered intravenously or in pill form. Medications usually work by targeting the cancer cells and killing them.
