Any type of oral surgery requires a recovery time, and jaw reconstruction is no different. If your jaw has been damaged or if you're in need of corrective jaw surgery, you'll need this procedure.
It can actually require you to stay in the hospital for several days since it involves cutting the jawbones and moving them. Following this procedure, you'll need to be prepared for a long recovery time. Here's what you can expect during that recovery.
It Will Take Six Weeks In most cases, it takes about six weeks for your jaw to heal to the point that you're not in pain or notice any swelling. However, it may take as long as 12 weeks for the jaw to fully heal. If there are complications or an infection, it can take longer.
In most cases, you won't be out of commission for all of that time. You can usually go back to work or return to your regular schedule anywhere from one week to three weeks after your surgery. It all depends on how you're healing and how much pain you're in. We do recommend you plan to rest for the full three weeks simply because you must give your jaw the time it needs to heal.
Be Prepared for Pain While you're in the hospital, you'll be given pain medication. You'll also be given a prescription for some medication to take during recovery. Usually, this prescription is not refilled, which means once it runs out, you'll take over-the-counter medication for pain.
However, you shouldn't be in pain for that long. If you find that you are hurting for longer than you should be or that the pain gets worse, call us right away. Do you believe you need jaw reconstruction surgery or have questions about it? Call us today to get answers.
