When you are suffering from pain in the mouth, you of course want to do whatever you can to come see us as quickly as you can. Still, given that you may not be able to get to our office immediately, there are a few things you can do while still at home to get some relief from the pain.
Keep in mind that these tips are not meant to replace dental care. You need the attention of a dental professional in order to treat the cause of the pain. However, until you are able to see us, these tips might help to keep your life a bit more bearable.
Managing Your Mouth Pain
One of the easiest things you can do is take a mild painkiller such as aspirin, Advil, or Tylenol. These painkillers are quite effective at managing lower levels of pain, and they may be all you need to make it until you can come see us.
Of course, you should always check with your doctor before taking a painkiller if you have any medical issues that could contraindicate their use. It may be a good idea to talk to your doctor the next time you have an appointment just to make sure there are no issues with you using these medications.
Another great way to help manage the discomfort is to use an ice pack on the area. Place some ice in a dishcloth and hold it against the area. The cool temperature will help reduce swelling and alleviate some of the pain. Always be careful that you are not putting ice in direct contact with your soft tissue, as doing so can lead to injuries.
